VPX and SOSA Solutions
Interoperable, rugged building blocks for modern embedded defense systems.
OpenVPX is the open-standard architecture defined by VITA 46, VITA 48, and VITA 65 that has become the backbone of next-generation defense and aerospace embedded computing. By standardizing high-speed serial interconnects, mechanical form factors, and system management across a common backplane, OpenVPX enables integrators to combine best-of-breed processing, networking, and I/O boards from multiple vendors into a single, interoperable platform. With the Department of Defense adopting the Sensor Open Systems Architecture (SOSA) technical standard built on OpenVPX, program managers can now reduce vendor lock-in, accelerate technology refresh cycles, and field systems that are ready for rapid capability upgrades throughout their service life.

Dawn VME Products VPX Portfolio
Dawn VME Products delivers a comprehensive range of VPX platforms engineered for the full spectrum of deployed defense environments. Every enclosure, backplane, and power supply is designed to meet stringent military qualification requirements while maintaining the modularity that SOSA and OpenVPX demand.
3U VPX Enclosures and Chassis
The 3U VPX form factor delivers maximum computing density in the smallest possible footprint. Dawn’s 3U offerings, including the CCE-3VX sealed cube and the ATR-5700 air-cooled ATR, are purpose-built for platforms where size, weight, and power (SWaP) budgets are critical. These enclosures support up to six or eight payload slots and integrate intelligent power management, thermal monitoring, and configurable backplane topologies that align with SOSA slot profiles.
6U VPX Enclosures and Chassis
When missions demand higher slot counts, larger daughtercard real estate, or additional I/O bandwidth, Dawn’s 6U VPX platforms provide the answer. The ATR-6800 series accommodates up to eight 6U VITA 48.2 conduction-cooled payload slots in a standard 1ATR ARINC 404A format, supporting both AC and 28 VDC power input. The 6U form factor is the standard choice for shipboard computing, ground-vehicle C4ISR, and fixed-site signal processing applications that require sustained high-throughput data handling.
VPX Backplanes
Dawn manufactures custom and standard VPX backplanes that support the high-speed serial fabric topologies defined in VITA 46 and VITA 65. Backplane configurations range from single-slot development carriers to multi-slot mesh and star topologies, with options for SOSA-aligned slot profiles. Each backplane is impedance-controlled and validated for signal integrity at data rates up to 16 GT/s per lane.
Conduction-Cooled and Air-Cooled Options
Deployed environments vary dramatically in available cooling resources. Dawn addresses this by offering both conduction-cooled and air-cooled variants across its product lines. Conduction-cooled chassis use VITA 48.2-compliant thermal interfaces and cold-plate coupling to remove heat without fans or forced airflow, making them ideal for sealed, dust-free operation in extreme temperature ranges. Air-cooled models use two-stage sealed or direct forced-air approaches for installations where ambient conditions permit.
Key Specifications and Compliance
Every Dawn VME Products VPX platform is built to meet or exceed the following standards and performance benchmarks:
- MIL-STD-810H: Tested for shock, vibration, altitude, humidity, temperature cycling, and salt fog to ensure reliable operation in the harshest deployed environments.
- MIL-STD-461G: Electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) compliance for operation alongside sensitive avionics and communications equipment.
- DO-160G: Environmental qualification for airborne equipment, covering everything from temperature and altitude to lightning-induced transients.
- VITA 46 (VPX): High-speed serial switched fabric backplane architecture supporting PCIe Gen3/Gen4, 10/40G Ethernet, and other protocols over a unified connector system.
- VITA 48 (VPX-REDI): Ruggedized Enhanced Design Implementation for conduction-cooled and air-cooled module packaging, ensuring reliable thermal management in enclosed systems.
- VITA 62: VPX power supply standard providing intelligent, monitored power distribution with hold-up energy for safe shutdown during power transients.
- VITA 65 (OpenVPX): System-level interoperability standard that defines module, slot, and backplane profiles for multi-vendor integration.
- SOSA Alignment: Conformance to the Sensor Open Systems Architecture technical standard, enabling hardware-level interoperability across DoD programs of record.
Modular, scalable architectures allow integrators to start with a single processing slot and expand to full multi-slot configurations without redesigning the enclosure or backplane. This approach protects program investment and supports phased technology insertion throughout a platform’s lifecycle.
Defense and Aerospace Applications
Dawn VME Products VPX platforms are deployed across every domain of modern defense operations:
Shipboard and Navy Computing
Surface combatants and submarines require rugged, shock-qualified computing systems that operate reliably in high-humidity, salt-spray environments. Dawn’s conduction-cooled 6U VPX chassis are designed for below-deck and above-deck installation, supporting combat management systems, radar processing, and electronic surveillance.
Airborne and UAV Systems
Manned and unmanned aircraft demand the smallest, lightest computing payloads with the lowest power consumption. Dawn’s 3U VPX platforms, including the sealed CCE-3VX cube, meet DO-160 airborne environmental standards and fit within tight aircraft equipment bays. These systems support real-time sensor fusion, mission computing, and datalink processing for ISR, EW, and strike missions.
Ground Vehicle C4ISR
Armored vehicles, mobile command posts, and forward-deployed sensor suites require computing platforms that withstand severe shock, vibration, and temperature extremes while operating from vehicle power buses. Dawn’s ATR-format VPX chassis are qualified to MIL-STD-810 vehicle-class profiles and accept 28 VDC input directly, eliminating the need for external power conditioning.
Electronic Warfare and Signal Processing
EW and SIGINT applications demand sustained high-throughput data capture, real-time spectral analysis, and low-latency response. The high-speed serial fabric architecture of OpenVPX, combined with Dawn’s impedance-controlled backplanes and robust power delivery, provides the deterministic data paths and processing headroom these missions require.
